Brake spring

What is the purpose of the secondary brake spring on a 8N left brake (part # 8N 2299)? I needed to replace the left brake shoes and there wasn't one. From the pictures in the parts and shop manuals I can't see how it is hooked up.

I believe due to the additional linkage involved with the left pedal the extra spring helps retract the shoes and raise the pedal.

The extra spring is needed as that side is somewhat self engaging when the brake is applied. The extra spring is needed to overcome that force. This us due to anchor points being the same even though rotation is opposite.

Couple of things I found useful was to use a large sliding clamp to hold the two shoes together while I got a spring on them. I also found it very helpful to duct tape those pins that the spring sits on from the rear of the shoe because I got tired of picking them off the ground. Just tape them in tight from the back and leave the tape there.

Thanks for the help. I can see from the picture how to install it. Where can I buy just this brake spring?

"If I were doing the brake job it would get these on both sides.."

I put them all in both sides except that silly felt seal.
That dang thing caused me more squeals than metal to metal
brakes on a Chevy Citation! I couldn't bring myself to grease it.
Although I did consider a little Vaseline. ;)

orry to be so thick skull, but I don't understand.

JMOR, if you jack the tractor up and put it in first gear and stand on the right side, the right wheel is turning clockwise. Now walk around to the left side and look at the left wheel. :)
