My 53 jubilee starts right off the bat. Then starts
sputtering , missing, backfiring , barely runs fir about
20 minutes then BAM! It runs like a top non stop.
We had a 2 n that used to act simular it had a small
channel rusted out in the head gasket that was
allowing some coolant to seep into the cylinder &
once that burned off it would run good. Thats my
best guess here , any thoughts or suggestions?

I would say 90 percent of those problems with those old fords is the carb. They have gotten so cheap now it better just to buy a new one. A good kit will cost around 30 bucks. new one for under 60. for originality I can see a rebuild but other wise I cant. I had problems started my jubilee I bought. one it started and tried to run n about 4/5 minutes it would finally run very well. put a new carb on it for 59bucks. starts great and runs great as soon as it starts. I also put an inline filter between the tank nd carb and made sure my hose from the air suction side of carb was on correctly. Mine is still 6 volt. fires right up every time.

That was my first thought. I pulled the carb everything looked good . Hit it with some carb cleaner & put it back on. One thing i noticed is a gray gritty very fine sludge in the bottom of the sediment bowl. & the sed bowl screen was crusty. I wonder if the ethanol gas is hard or corrosive on these old units. I know its hard on chainsaw carbs

lcohol collects moisture & moisture & metal=corrosion.

If it stumbles for 20 minutes then clears up all at once, I would suspect one cylinder is not firing. Next time it acts up, let it run for a few minutes and then remove all the spark plugs. One plug should look black/wet compared to the others - that would be your bad boy. Replacing the plugs should clear the problem. In the event the problem returns I would suspect a problem with that cylinder is causing the plug to become fouled.
