Governor housing matrial.

The governor on my 2n was not working correctly so I decided to replace it. I had a couple of extras. The one on the tractor was for an 8N. It has the opening for the proof meter with a cap. It is made of aluminum as is one of the extras. The other is made of cast steel. The cast one must be older I think. What years were they made of steel and when did the material change ?

I do not believe there was ever a cast steel governor. I will do more checking, but have never seen one. The early 9N governors were cast iron. The first ones had no markings had 4 screws holding the internal guts plate on with. These were used up until at least s/n 8000. The next revision saw the body with markings "MODEL 9NA" as shown and now only two screws. They were changed to aluminum bodies at some point with the 2N model. All 9N and 2N governors had 3-arms. The oil line port was added in 1944 for oil lube to the governor and any customer coming in to the dealer with early 9N cast governors and no lube line, were automatically retrofitted with an oil line. The 8N governor was also aluminum bodied and now a 2-arm unit. Mid-1950 governors also had an NPT tapped port for the Proofmeter cable.

That is the one I have, the 9N-A and the two screws. So it is cast iron and a fairly early one. Pretty good condition. No flat spots. Will keep in case it is needed later.

Following up as I checked all my books and data on governors. There was never cast steel governor body. The early governors were, as I posted, the no-marking first cast iron body, p/n 9N-18200-A; then the 9N-18200-B cast iron body with "MODEL 9N-A" cast raised markings and others; then the 9N-18200-C model, aluminum body. Thus the body was changed to aluminum prior to the introduction of the 2N Tractor Model evident by the '9N' part prefix. If the governor would have been changed to aluminum into 2N production, the part number prefix would then have been a '2N' one. HTH...
