8n no timing window?

Have a 52 8n that I recently had to change distributor out on. I am assuming timing is correct as I marked the old distributor and stabbed the new one the same way. Everything started and ran well but seems to run a little hotter than before. How can the timing be set with a light without the timing window present on my model?

ounds like you have side distributor with an older block. If so, you would need to find TDC #1 compression stroke and mark your crankshaft pulley.

Other than pulling the head how could I find tdc? Before I removed the old distributor I cranked the engine and marked the rotor when I started to get compression on the #1 cylinder. I aligned the new distributor rotor with mark. Only problem is old distributor may not have been in perfect time.

No Head Removal required.I have a 43 with a magnito, when you rebuild a mag you set
the mag to fire OTDC #1 cyl. You find TDC on #1 this way --remove #1 plug----roll
motor over by pully or use a hand crank, when you feel the intake stroke take a 6" or
7" piece of #9 hog wire and place it in the cyl. vertically, Hold the wire lightly
between your thumb and index finger. Slowly turn motor, the piston will push the wire
up, when the wire stops your at TDC. Ya can do this a few times and when you know
your on TDC go about your business. OR as Geiger said drill a hole. Find a 8N with a
window an measure it out and step drill it till you can see your marks, make a lid
and cover it up when your done.

What WW2N says is much easier said than done, due to the spark plug location being offset to the side of cylinder.

If it starts and runs fairly well, then you must be close. Because it seems to be running a bit hotter, I would try retarding the spark a little at a time by rotating the distributor body CCW. If it gets worse, then go the other way, but I think an engine that's advanced too far will run hot.

ay be that off either way will run hot, but for sure it will run hot retarded. Reason is that burn is still occurring as piston moves down the cylinder & more cylinder wall is exposed to flame. Experienced that!
