I recently replaced my radiator, hoses and thermostat in my 52 8n. When I replaced the hoses I noticed that there was no thermostat in the upper hose. The tractor has always ran fine without it but I went ahead and installed the thermostat. What is the advantage of having a thermostat vs. not having one?

What is the advantage of having a thermostat vs. not having one?

In a humid climate, engines condense moisture in the crankcase and dilutes the lubrication properties of the oil. A thermostat will bring an engine up to temp quickly and keep it elevated to burn off the condensation.

A thermostat also serves to maintain a even and consistent temperature throughout the entire block.

The purpose of the t-stat is to quickly get the engine to it?s optimum operating temp and keep it there. Do use a thermostat. If you don't the engine heats unevenly, which means it wears unevenly. A cool-running engine does not heat the oil sufficiently and you will get sludge build-up in the pan as a result. Further, water will remain in the oil because the oil never gets hot enough to evaporate the water; that creates acids in the oil leading to bearing corrosion. N tractors came from the factory in 1939 with a 160-degree thermostat. Ford added t-stats to cars in 1933. See tip # 25

Along with what is said below, I have found that when the tractor does not come up to operating
temperatiure and maintain it plugs foul easier on the low lead gasoline. When ever I just need to move a
tractor, I let it run until up to temp (I think). Fewer fouled plugs.
