yesterday morning I threw out some old bread that was accumulating in the freezer. short time later I saw crows flying off with pieces of said bread. later on while cutting the grass I noticed that the crows flew off with the white bread and left the wheat bread.

are crows really that fussy ???

Birds are funny. Most all cannot smell -no orafactory(sp) sensors. So, how do they know when there is bread or any other food out? I do the same thing -toss out old bread, buns, and pizza crust and it is usually the robins, blue jays, and sparrows who nail it first. When the crows soon discover it and move in, all the others fly away. Crows can't smell, that is why they are good at scavenging the roadkill; they will eat anything no matter how decayed and rancid smelling it may be. Birds also cannot pee, at least not like we do. They pass pee into their stools and pass it that way. That is why when they drop those big white and purple drops on your newly washed truck or car, it splatters all over.

Crows:
Genus Corvidae.
Crows, a couple kinds of ravens and magpies.
They are the smartest of all the birds the only one that plays.
I've always liked the things.
When I lived in AK for a couple of year they had big ravens - two plus times the size of crows.
I learned to imitate their croaking and would call them. They would sit on the telephone wires and croak back at me.
They would be a dozen of them sometimes and they would raise a big ruckus. Bouncing around, hanging upside down on the wires acting goofy, making a racket. I would feed them all kinds of junk. They really liked dried dog food softened with a bit of water.
Throw the pieces up and they would catch them in mid air. Fight and squabble over a dish of dog food. Even try to steal the dish. I had a couple of them semi tame and they'd hang around. Would swap jacket and cap with a friend of mine and put his eyeglasses on but they still knew who was me.
I would twist a couple of chunks of dog food in paper and they learned to untwist the paper to get them out. They would play with a piece of string.
They love shiny objects and will steal them.
I lost a couple of 3/8" drive sockets to them. I like corvidae.
Sorry. Got to reminiscing.
Dunno why they wouldn't eat the wheat bread.

Ultradog you have to much time on your hands----- not realy sound like a great way to relax and enjoy nature. I saw a show with all the things that crows are known to do and they do have a real thought process. The reasearchers put a treat in a glass container for a crow to retrieve it. The crow could not get it with its beak or feet. After studying the situation a time the bird left and returned with a stick, jabbed and retrieved the treat. Now my search is on about them not taking the dark bread.

Whole wheat bread has too much fiber in it...gives them the squirts. I've always been a fan of crows but they become my mortal enemy just after planting my food plots, then its them against me... they usually come out ahead.
