How to replace PTO shaft sleeve?

PTO was leaking, so I pulled the shaft to replace the seal (thanks to all the great info on this site!). But, the (chromed?) shaft collar is a bit rusted, so I assume it needs replacing. The part is cheap enough, but how tough is this to get off/on? Is there an alternative, like sanding it off with progressively finer grits?

Just to be clear, when I say "sand it off", I mean sanding the rust off of the sleeve, not sanding the entire sleeve off of the shaft

Do you mean the bearing sleeve is rusted? Best to replace all the parts with new and forget about sanding. Old sleeve will need to be split to get off and new on heated up to install as it is a shrink fit. Get out your I&T F-04 Manual as it has a chapter on how to R&R the PTO Shaft.

How critical to you is it that the seal never leaks? Would a drop of oil once a week cause you to blow your stack or could you tolerate a drip per day? Were it mine, I'd use a rust remover, then polish the collar with fine grit wet or dry paper, probably 400 grit.

A drip now and then would probably be fine. Sounds like getting the sleeve off is a pain. Just talked to a farmer friend (had to use his press to get the shaft seal out, as my arbor presses wasn't handling it) and he recommended sanding the sleeve smooth. I think that's what I'll do.

Thanks, all!

when i did mine i just pressed the sleeve off and replaced it with a new one. I never heated my new sleeve to press it on although its not a bad idea to do that.

as a cheap as a new sleeve is i would just replace it because if your sleeve gets worn from grinding you will chew up your new seal and you will end up replacing it again

Might as well replace the bearing save some headaches
