12v Conversion

My 8N (barn queen) has been converter to 12v many years ago and I am happy with it however I never was happy with the way the 12v slams the Bendix into the ring gear when stating (using 6v starter). Is there any economical way to reduce the 12v to 6v going to the starter? Would having the 6v starter rewound to 12v soften the start? I've seen many of the 12v starters being advertised to work on 6v as well as 12v, and wonder if I replaced the starter with one of those, would the Bendix still slam the ring gear? Any suggestions?

I've never tried it myself, but some have reported success with using a LLLOOONNNGGG light-gauge battery cable to tame the starter down a little.

Could be looped out of the way and out of sight of "the correct police".

'Spose the right way to do it would be to add the length of cable between the solenoid and starter, replacing the copper strip that's there now.

Would be simple and cheaper than having the starter re-worked.

If you are willing to throw a little money at it, you mite want to try a modern-design positive-engagement gear reduction starter.

There's a seller or two of them on the 'net.

Once again, I haven't tried one yet, (but intend to), but have seen some good reports about them on various Forums on the 'net.

Thanks Bob- I really appreciate your reply. I thought the right amount of resistance added in series with the starter motor could drop the voltage down to 6v and all would be well. Wasn't sure if the 12v starter motors I see advertised for use on 6 and 12v are nothing more than a 6v one and would not solve the problem as maybe a real 12v only starter would do. If you do try one of the positive engagement gear reduction starters let me know what you think. Thanks again.

Just wondering if you have had any problem with breaking the bendix or ring gear? I got two I have converted to 12 volts and so no problems with either. I do like the look and idea of the new starters. If I have problems I may go to them.

I wouldn't worry about it until something goes wrong with what you now have. When/if it does give trouble and you want a 12 volt replacement, the [b:873a34fc38]Gear Reduction Starter[/b:873a34fc38] has promise.

i'll add my 2 cents to those who have already said they run 12 volts with a 6 volt starter without problems. been 7 years now for me.

Been running a 6 volt starter on 12 volts for 22 trouble free years on a 2N. Replaced the flywheel ring gear about the same time during an engine rebuild. Replaced what appeared to be the original Bendix type drive maybe 10 years ago with a later style from Carpenter... called it a roller clutch as I recall.

I might add that humid weather no-starts has thoroughly tested the 6 volt starters mettle on 12 volts.

I would change starter drives. Cheaper and would probably fix it. There are several makers of starter drives and most are a little different.

if work leave it alone .
if break replace it
if you want to just replace replace it
but went u do that replace starter ring too

I jump start my 9N with 12V for years and have had zero issues. Maybe your starter is the issue and not the voltage going to it?
