8N Tractor woes

I am having problem getting my starter to operate correctly. I have rewired the tractor, it is an 8N, to a 12 volt system with a one wire alternator. I have 12 V to the switch, the terminal, the ammeter and the right side of the solenoid, and to the alternator and to the coil. My problem, is the new switch that I put in will not engage the starter. I suspected the solenoid, so I replaced it with a new one. I still get nothing. I took the yellow wire that goes from the top of the solenoid to the start button and put it to ground and still nothing. I tried touching the pos. battery cable to the left side of the solenoid and it turned over, but the wire got very hot, I only turned it for a couple seconds. I am at a loss for ideas, unless they sold me a bad solenoid. This thing started right up and ran last fall, but sat over the winter and would not start this spring. Had a bunch of crazy switches and wiring issues so I thought I would do it right. Would appreciate any ideas that might help.

First, never change more than one single thing at a time.
Now, to your problem. IF, you have the correct solenoid for that application, then most likely you need to flip it over where you effectively connect battery to the solenoid post that is now connected to starter motor and the starter connect to solenoid post that is currently connected to battery. Try that.

I did replace one thing at a time, the exception was the 12 volt wiring conversion kit. I will try flipping the solenoid. Thanks for the tip.
