Correct voltage at coil

What should the correct voltage be at the top of a coil on a 8n original tractor? Can you jump all the wiring by running a wire from the coil to the battery?

I'll assume you are talking about a front or square coil.......correct?

With the key on & points open, you should see battery voltage, 6.35 volts or so on a fully charged battery. About half that if the points are closed.

Yes, you can run a jumper wire from the battery; just don't run the tractor like that for very long because you are bypassing the OEM resistor.
