48 8n Wheel Won't Turn After Repair

I just replaced axle seals and hubs on my 8n. Installed axle nut and tightened (haven't torqued all the way to 450 ft-lbs yet) and the wheel doesn't want to turn. If I back off the axle nut a bit, it will turn. It appears I've compressed the inner rubber axle seal against the bearing? Has anyone had this issue and how did you remedy?

Thank you.

I would look for other interference, as I don't think that little rubber or cork seal would prevent turning hub/axle. I think that seal and everything it touches turn together, too.

Have you installed the spacers to adjust the spacing between both axles? Oh yes! That is improtant.
Properly set, turn one rear wheel and the other should rotate the opposite direction. Other side does
not move, too many spacers. Moves the same direction, not enough spacers.

Is the hub going on the axle to far and the brake drum dragging on the backing plate? From worn hubs and axle splines.

Spacers are correct. Wheels turn opposite.

It's a new hub but maybe the splines are worn. When i back off the axle nut it turns without any mechanical noise though. If it is the rubber axle seal, will it damage my bearing if it starts to degrade?

Tighten until it rubs but will still turn hard, turn it, take apart & look for scrape marks.

I think it is the drum rubbing on the backing plate (also a new part). New hub splines are flush with the end of the axle.

Any recommendations or will it be OK? I can drive the tractor.

The hubs being flush with the axle indicates the axle splines are worn too. Wear occurs due to operating tractor with loose hubs.

Photo shows correct hub to axle fitment. As the axle nut is torqued down, the hub will fasten to the axle.

If you run it with flush, it will soon wear out your new hubs.

Some have inserted shims between worn axle and new hub to achieve tapered interference fit. If it were mine, I would replace the axles.

No, don't operate it.

Since undersized hubs haven't been available for decades, you will need to replace the axles.

As said below, new axles. I have tried in the past to machine down the backside of the hub and ad a
washer to the outside to slide over the axle splines. I have tried shimming. Neither were worth the
time and effort. Do it right even when it bites the pocketbook. Cheaper in the long run. My opinion
and HTH.

New axle on the way. Thank you all for all of your help.

Ordered an axle on Amazon and it won't fit. Chinese junk.
Visually it looks correct but it will not go all the way into
the diff. Have you ever had this problem?

I have not had that problem but I use serviceable OEM parts first and only buy reproduction parts from a reputable parts house that specializes in tractors.

Amazon is good to their customers and will make it right.
