Differences between the n's

This one goes out to Hokie, or anyone that
may know the answer...

I know that between the 2n and jubilee that
Ford used the flathead engine for the
powerplant, but as time went on and the
tractor evolved, the horsepower and
displacement increased. What changed there?

Displacement didn't change in the "N" era, compression was increased slightly along the way.

to expand on what bob said, the compression increase was due to the use of a slightly shallower head on the 8N as compared to 9/2N.

That OHV engine used int he jubes up to the end of the 4 cyl's was the Red Tiger.

great engine, though I like the gas implementation of it way better than the diesel.

So I thought I'd add another observation. My first car in 1966 was a 41 Chev Coupe. It had a 216 CI Valve in head engine with cast iron pistons and babbit bearings. Why were current and later tractors up to 52 still using Flatheads ? Was it a chevy/ford thing ?

My guess is that Henry abhorred change plus the flat head is simpler and cheaper to make with fewer moving parts than the OHV. His grandson was at the reins when the tractor line was upgraded to the OHV.
