NAA Steering gear rebuild

Completely dismantled the strg. gear yesterday. Plenty of oil still in it but not up to the fill plug. Surprising amount of debris in the bottom of the case. It took quite a few whacks with a hammer & wood block to dislodge the side covers. I couldn't tell if it had ever been rebuilt as it still had the cork & metal Sector shaft seal & retainers. Found a Alum. Tube just the right size to pop out the column seal. Dismantled & cleaned it. Still in good shape. QUESTION: The YT store shows two different priced replacement Sector Shaft seals. One is green, maybe CR. The other may be generic. Are these better than the original and have you ever had a leak afterwards ? This also had nine shims for a total of .038". Several quite rusty where they sat at the top of the case cutout. I did the check per FO-19 for worm shaft play. Non perceptible.

I can't help you on the seals.
I usually just go to my local bearing house
and have them match them up for me.
I think more important than getting good
seals is getting them in right. They can be
tricky to get started and if you don't
start them right then the outer metal part
will bend and you have to get another one.
I have a piece of tubing that I turned to
the right dia in the lathe to drive them
in.
Also, if your sector bushings are worn a
lot the seals won't last long.
I always fill the box with JD cornhead
grease afterwards. Install a zerk in place
of the fill plug and pump in two tubes of
it. Even with new seals 90W will drip a
bit. Agravating to have them leak down the
side of a fresh painted transmission.
Corn head grease doesn't leak at all.

Thank you Ultra dog. For the seal driver I did the same with the Alum tube. The bushings had very little play. Plan to use the cornhead grease too.
