I have a 1947 2N which makes a loud "clacking" or Snapping noise Sound when I turn the key and start the engine-It sounds like an electrical Clacking noise. It stops after the engine starts but can't figure out why or what it is. I think it is not supposed to do this HELP....

Most starter problems reported here are fixed with thoroughly cleaning all the electrical connections in the starter systems. You can't see a bad connection just by looking at it. So many people come on here saying that everything looks nice and clean, but it's just not the case. It certainly sounds like electricity arcing.

Here's a tip. Go out in the dark and have someone start your tractor while you are down there looking at the starter. Look for any sparks and this will give you a place to start cleaning.

I'm guess here, because that's all I can do, but you say the
noise starts when you turn the key. Not when you press the
neutral safety start button by the shifter, so has this tractor
been converted to 12V with a key start ignition like a car?
When converted to 12V I've heard an audible clack as the
bendix/drive gear engages the flywheel but that noise does
not continue while cranking. It is a one time mechanical clack.

If it is an arcing/snapping noise, then I agree with CaryC,
check for loose/dirty connections. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for he replies. I should have been more specific- MY BAD. My 1947 2 N is original to the extent it is still a 6 volt positive ground - updated with a key ignition - the button push start was not operational when I bough it 20 some years ago--- After I turn the ignition (key start) to the far right - the motor turns over and the "clacking" noise begins when the starter engages and quits after one of two operations - either the motor starts and the key return to the run position or I release the key and quit trying to start it. If it starts it runs OK no clacking noise. The noise seems to be related to the efforts to start the engine. as I mentioned after it starts the noise is no longer heard. For this reason I thought the noise is related to the starter. This just recently began - so far I have cleaned all battery terminals - checked all bolt down connections - no luck.!!

Sounds like a solenoid was used in that setup, I would check to see if that's what's making the noise. You may be able to feel it click in and out while cranking.

I believe it is the solenoid-thanks for the tip. Have started going thru all associated electrical connections (none of which have likely been touched by human hands since the push button starter gave up the ghost at some unknown date) and a keyed ignition was installed.
