Zenith Carb

I have been having issues with a 9N that started several years ago with occasional sputtering on a sideways slant or around a turn. The issue has progressed to severe sputtering anytime it is not idling. I had the opportunity to switch carb's with an 8N that works perfectly and the problem went with the carb. I have tried adjusting the carb several times per directions found on this site with no improvement. Is there anybody out there that works on them like the M/S's? I haven't had a lot of luck with the local shop that does N work.

Thanks

Here's what I would do. Look for a used MS carb on ebay. Rebuild it and put the Zenith on the shelf. There are several used carbs on ebay right now. I am not affiliated with any of the sellers. Look for a seller with the best rating.

I have one of these Zeniths on an 8N for 12 years, and I never had any trouble. Sounds like you have a dirt problem. Take out the main jet and drain the fuel into a glass jar. See what comes out.

Dr. Larry;
Was really good talking with you, again!! After I got off the phone with you today,....I called Royse' wife and told her that I had talked with you about the Possibility, of fixing you up with another MS carb. (overhauled), like the one I did for you in 2011. She will be telling Royse, about you, and he will be expecting a call from you, this eve. around 5:30 pm today.
Hope all works out for you!!

DrLarryE, sorry I missed your call this afternoon.
I called the number back but they said you were gone for the day.
I'm sure I can help if you want to give me a call or email me a
number to call you. No need to post a number here.

"When they run, they are great. But, when they break, they are hard to fix."

Indeed. I'm currently searching for parts for two different models
of Zeniths off N engines. Many suppliers won't even call me back.
They simply can't get the parts. Buy a new carb or re-use old parts.
Gaskets and seals are readily available for one, but not the other.
I'll fix these two, but they may be the last ones.
It's certainly easier to get parts for a Marvel Schebler.

Ever try Mikes Carburetors. He has a lot of products and some made in the USA.

"Ever try Mikes Carburetors."

Yes I have, no luck yet.
The throttle and choke rod pictured don't hook up to Ford linkage.

Here's a picture of one of the choke shafts I'm looking for and a
picture of one of the throttle shafts I'm looking for. Yes, I know
that throttle shaft looks like All-Thread, but it's not. It is a factory
machined part with pinned on bushings. The threads were used to
attach various linkage connections. Kind of a universal fit model
that came off an 8N industrial engine. The threads were stripped on one side.
I have managed to fix both of these so they are usable for their applications,
but if anyone knows of a source to buy them I'd be happy to know about it.

The top shaft wouldn't be hard to make. Just need a file and 1/4 brass rod. I made two throttle shafts for Case SC tractors that
way.

"I made two throttle shafts for Case SC tractors that way."

I've had the pleasure of working on the Zenith off an SC too.
I never did find the jets for the SC Zenith. I modified ones out
of a Marvel Schebler to fit it and made it work. Too bad we can't
just buy parts for them like we can for a Marvel Schebler.

That looks like the same kit I've been using from A&I. It's not complete but is the most complete kit I could find. Steiner tractor parts also sells it.

The M/S carburetor on my 8N has some issues. One being a crack in the casting where the fuel inlet is. I decided to purchase a new carburetor on eBay for $46.95. It most likely came from China, but I figured I couldn't fix the original carburetor for that price. After the weather straightens out I'll install it and report back on how it works out.

"I figured I couldn't fix the original carburetor for that price."

That is likely a true statement. The kit plus shipping would cost more.
Not to mention the crack and trying to take care of that.

I've heard of people having good luck with those aftermarket carbs.
I have two of them here, so I can tell you that a standard M/S rebuild
kit does not fit them. In fact, the float pins are not even interchangeable.
But at <$50 each, it's a throw away. Buy another and move on.
I sincerely hope it works out well.

I could probably put a gob of J&B Weld over the crack, and build up the worn throttle shaft with the same stuff. Don't laugh, I did it once before and it worked. The worn shaft let's too much air pass through to make it virtually impossible to adjust the idle mixture to get it to run smoothly at idle less than 800rpm. The knock off carburetor could be fixed in the future by making the gaskets and possibly the throttle shaft, but I'll probably be long gone by time that will happen.

As I see it, the crack would be the problem. Marvel Schebler kits come with new shafts so they're a non-issue.

The point I was trying to make is why buy a complete kit when all that is needed is a new throttle shaft? Back when I was really poor I had a tractor engine that wouldn't idle due to a very worn throttle shaft. I could adjust the idle mixture screw all the way in with no effect on the engine, because of all the air leaking around the throttle shaft. I removed the shaft and gooped it up with Delco-Remy electrical epoxy. I put it in the oven to cure fast, then turned it down to size with a friends lathe. After that I could adjust the idle mixture screw and make the engine run smoothly at very low RPM's. I would have done the same with my 8N carburetor if it didn't have the crack at the fuel inlet.
