No compression cyl 1 2ce

I started trying to get my 8 n running after 6 years. Rebuilt carb, put in EI. New pugs and wires. Checked compression in cylinder 1 and it was 60. It started and I ran ok for about 20minutes. Then I turned it off and changed oil, put new gasket and screen on fuel bowl, new gas line. After all that it will start but I have to keep choke out half way and it runs rough. With air cleaner off it looks like gas is spitting out the carborator.

Today I took hood off and checked compression. Zero on 1&2.120 on 3&4. Any advice would be great. If it?s fairly simple I want to try but not wanting to rebuild engine now.

With Zero compression I'd suspect the valves stuck open.
You can pull the side cover and watch to see if they move.
If not, spraying them down with your favorite penetrating oil may help.
Adding ATF or MMO in those cylinders and letting it soak may help too.

Tbordenwa,You say that, With air cleaner off it looks like gas is spitting out the corroborator.
That means at least the intake valves are stuck open.Remove #1 and #2 plugs and pour about 3 tablespoons of Marvel Mystery Oil or some ATF down cylinders, put the plugs back in and bar the engine over or crank by hand,or in high gear rock back and fourth to get oil on the upper valve stems. Let it soak a day or two rolling it over a few times a day.Remove front valve cover to check and soak valve steems with oil if needed.

I took the front side cover off as Bruce suggested. I don?t know which valve is intake and which is exhaust. Front valve for #1cylinder is moving but stem looks broken. Same for back valve for #2 cylinder.
I have watched Rachel?s video on doing a valve job. Is that what I need to do?
Thanks for any advice

How can the valve be moving if the stem is broken? Do you have the FO-4 service manual? Take a look at the exhaust and intake manifold and see where each goes.

Well good question, I have been reading and watching videos to se how the valves work. . Maybe the lifter was moving? And the valve was in
the up position? I am looking at them from the side cover opening. I do,have the Fo 4 manual, I didn?t see anything helpful there.
I will look again tomorrow.

Rachel? I have no idea who Rachel might be, but a "valve job" isn't going to fix a broken spring or valve stem. All a valve job does is resurface the valve and seat.

It should be pretty obvious if you have a broken stem or spring. Turn the engine over and look.
