Is this normal?

My 1949 8n starts and runs perfectly fine, however when I start it up in neutral, I notice it moves forward about 2 inches...that's with the clutch in or out. It also does this with PTO on or off. I also notice that it seems to start better with clutch in.

if its really cold out it will do that, because gear oil is very stiff.had 801 years ago that did that.if below zero had to hold clutch down a few minutes

"I also notice that it seems to start better with clutch in."

Yes they will, and they should always be started with the clutch in.
Operators manual even recommends that they be started that way.
As far as creeping, what oil are you using and what part of the world?
Mine would creep here in Michigan, but resolved using UTF.

I use Traveller brand too, but I use the Universal Tractor Fluid
that meets Fords current specification M2C142D. ~$35 for 5 gallons.
It is far less "stiff" in the winter. I've not had any trouble with it.

I've heard others complain that it leaks easier.
I've not had that problem, but if I did I would simply fix the leaks.

They all start better with the clutch disengaged.

Why have your battery and starter turn the gears in the transmission and pump hydraulic oil to lift whatever is on the lift while, at the same time, cranking the engine?

One should always disengage the clutch while cranking.

When cranking tractors with live hydraulics, lower the tough control lever all of the way before cranking.

So do you think when it warms up this spring, the creeping forward will stop or lessen? I think i may switch to the UTF before next fall if you guys think the thicker weight oil is the culprit.

I think the creeping is due to the SAE 90 gear oil. I also think that in areas with a real winter UTF is a better choice for a whole host of reasons. Most notably it is suitable for year round use in hydraulic systems at temperatures approaching 0F.

I think it will.
