I,m working on a starter from a 8N . Does all 8N,s Take the same starter and drive.
Also does the starter just slide back in I had a lot of trouble getting it out and part of it seems to be missing . There isn't any collar on the end of the shaft there is a hole for the pin but no collar.

Thanks for any help

Got pictures of it?

i've never done it, but no, it doesn't just slide back in. a certain amount of tilting and maneuvering is involved. from what i've heard, assuming i ever need to do this particular job, i suspect a certain amount of facial contortion and swearing will also be involved.

welcome to YT :)

The starters do not exactly just slide out,
take some tilting and tipping and figuring.
Be careful to not let the to long starter
bolt come all the way out of the starter,
things will start falling out.

I've pulled lots of these starters and
gotten them out without much trouble. After
market starters might be harder to deal
with?

A pic would be helpful to see if you've got
everything together right

8n tractors all had the same starter. At least originally.
There is an old style and new style drive gear though.
Either of them has to be maneuvered up and over the flywheel
when reinstalling the starter. The new style is a bit smaller, so
it is a bit easier. This is the old style with the big spring on it.

This is the new style that replaces it.

The FORD N-SERIES TRACTOR starter pocket on the blocks are machined with a scallop/relief at the 2:00 Position as shown in these photos for ease of starter installation. It is also better to remove the brass drain petcock for better maneuvering. You need to carefully angle the starter out and downward to remove and reinstall. Once out slap the long bolts back in and secure with nuts to prevent the guts from falling out. Once that happens it will be a new experience in futility putting them back together. It is highly recommended to that you gently sand or Scotch Brite the face of the pocket to ensure a good electrical contact.

You could always go with one of these high torque mini starters available on Ebay. They work off the front of the flywheel ring gear. No need to get that big bulky thing past the ring gear.

I would like to thank every one that posted .By seeing the pictures I found out what it should look like. And that told me what I had and what I needed.
From the pictures I figured out the drive was stuck in the extended position. So I'm guessing it was stuck in the fly wheel. Don't know how long they ran it that way but it pretty much destroyed the starter.
Have bought a new one but I haven't got it installed yet. The tractor belongs to my granddaughter and she lives about eighty miles from me. Should get up to her place this week and get it put in.
Again thanks to every one I don't have a book on the tractor so it was a great help to me.

It's a crap shoot when installing one. Just don't get discouraged.
Sometimes one will happen to slip in on the first try. Sometimes one can mess with one for hours. But rest assured it will fit in there. Just take a flash light and look in that hole and see the ring gear. Now you know where that starter drive has to go.

Just get it in the correct position and hold your mouth in the right position and it will go in. Please let us know how you make out.

Here you go. This is a rebuilt one but they also sell new ones on Ebay. Just do a search on "Ford 8N mini starter"

i clicked on that link and decided to read his sales pitch. i'm not questioning how nice these things are, but the only applications listed are Ns - do i really need a starter that give me more clearance between it and the exhaust?

More clearance can't hurt can it? :)

"do i really need a starter that give me more clearance between it and the exhaust?"

Maybe if you have a V8 conversion?

I assumed HFJ was referring to the fact that the exhaust is on the opposite side of the engine.

Sure but since it's a smaller starter, can you honestly say it doesn't give you more clearance between the exhaust and the starter?

No sir, but as HFJ pointed out, is that needed? LOL
I think sellers will say a lot of things to sell their products.
Not saying this is a bad product, just that many sellers really stretch to try to sell.
I've invented a few of my own special words fighting the original starters up and over the flywheel.
I definitely can see the attraction and the price isn't much different if buying new.

Aw c'mon...we're all kidding about that statement. But doesn't this starter also fit some other early Ford engines used in cars?

When I was in the gun grip business, I started out selling on Ebay. I ran a lot of different ads. I had "boiler plate" descriptions for ads that I copied and pasted in the ads instead of typing all that stuff in every add. Some of the "boiler plate" only pertained to certain grips and guns. So I had to edit it for each ad. I think we all know that the guy just happened to leave something in his "boiler plate" that he should have taken out for that particular ad.

It was probably just an honest mistake. I don't believe the guy was trying to fool anyone about anything. So, why don't we just let it go? We had a few laughs.

Went to my granddaughters today to put the starter on. I took the drain cock and oil dip stick out before I started. I could get the starter over the fly wheel but then I couldn't get the back high enough to get the nose to go into the tube it fits in. It was hitting on the oil filter. Its a screw on type. I took it off and the starter slipped right in. I don't know if the tractor came with that filter or if it came with a cartridge type oil filter and it has been changed to a screw on type. I'm not sure what year the tractor is.
Any way it was easy to finish it up and worked great.
Thanks for all your help it saved me a lot of work and probably some swearing

Most certainly the tractor didn't come with that screw on filter. Someone removed the canister and installed that.
