outer axle seal parts questions

I just started an axle seal and brake pad replacement job on a 1949 8n. I have been using the John Smith page but it is a little confusing. It being a 1949 I should only have an outer seal. Apparently you can buy the seals alone or already pressed into the retainer. These are part number
A8NN4251A. I have two of these. Can I pull the old seals out of the old retainers and install these or do I need to buy the retainer A8NN4248A with the seal already in it? Is this just such a pain that most folks buy the retainer and seal?

Looking at the exploded diagram of the IT Manual on page 138 It looks like I will also need number 7 and 9 gaskets, 8N4290 and 8N4225.

I got the left side drum and hub off. I broke an impact flat head screw driver but it did get six of those flat head screws out. It's just too cold in Illinois today to work on the others. Will try the cold chisel method on the stubborn ones.

As Hobo said, but ........you probably don't know which seals you need until it is apart, because some used a seal (4251A) pressed into the bearing retainer and some used a separate seal/plate bolt on assy (4248A).

On the box of seals I bought it Has the 4251A number and then it says "for" 4248B, seeming 4251A is replacing 4248B. This stuff can be mind bending for sure.

ay be, but seems to me that I remember both an early & late bearing retainer & I can't say with any certainty that the late press-in seal (4251A) will fit in the early bearing retainer.?? Last time I did one, I bought both & used the one I needed & the other is spare for a different tractor or scrap.
