Sherman Trans

Wondering if someone could help me out with some information. I have a running 1947 8N that I use alot. I recently purchased a 1945 9N for parts ($900) that has a Sherman Combination Transmission. The owner says it ran 8 or 9 years ago. I was wondering how I could put the Sherman onto the 8N. Do I take the Sherman out of the 9N and install it in the 8N? or do I swap the whole transmissions from one to the other?

Take the Sherman out of the 9N and put into the 8N,you have the extra gear, just do some careful measuring before you drill the hole in the trans case, you can use the 9N trans. to get your dims. from and bolt the Sherman in just like when you took it out of the 9n,I always check the backlash before I take it out and shim if needed to duplicate on the new install.

Aren't the input shafts different between the 8 & 9 N's?

Steering boxes won't interchange so as Mike said just pull the Sherman and install in 8n. While out check the gears and bearings. Change the oil cause if there was water contamination in the 9n trans than there will be water contamination in the Sherman

He said it was a '45 which would make it a helical cut, same as
the 8n. That said there was talk of an early straight cut
Sherman but in all my years of pulling Sherman's out of 9n's I
have never seen one. The trans gears have always been changed
out to the helical cut

"He said it was a '45 which would make it a helical cut"

Yes, but that would also make it not a 9N. '45 would be a 2N.
Sometimes it's hard to give good advice with the info we have.
At $900 I would expect to make it run and have two tractors.
