YT 12V Conversion In - Voltage Meter Pegged w/o Battery

Happy New Year! I purchased and installed the YT 12V conversion along with a new 12V coil and Volt Meter. The tractor starts great with a jumper and I noticed that with no battery (12v) connected the Voltage Meter pegs all the way to the 20+ V mark on the far right? Is this normal without a battery load? I didn't want to connect a new battery until I made sure this was okay as I didn't want to fry the battery from overcharging?

Thanks for your ideas

Welcome to the forum!
I wouldn't run it without a battery in it.
Doing so could damage your new alternator.

Google "Load Dump" and you will see that you
allowed the alternator to spike up to a horrific level
that can fry quite a bit of stuff. The battery load
keeps the voltage down. The battery has an
incredibly low internal resistance.
Please, don't ever run without a battery.
Respectfully,
Greg

Thank you for the kind reply and not putting my lack of knowledge down. I appreciate it. The battery is in and running fine. I get about 15 Volts in charging.

"I get about 15 Volts in charging."

That sounds about right on an analog gauge.
Should see almost 13V key on, engine off, with the battery
fully charged. Then about 15V running and charging.
