Hydraulic Lift

My hydraulics will not hold the lift very long and knocks when I carry a load and drive at the same time. I'm not sure what the knock is about, but the sinking lift I understand to be solved by replacement of the cylinder and the rings. I have viewed Rachael's excellent video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcWtNVOxzDg ) on changing that cylinder. I think that I can do that pending fair weather and a little courage.

Is there anything else in that space that needs attention? I would not know since I have never monkeyed around with the hydraulics before. I ordered the cylinder, the gasket set and the rings for the cylinder. Rachael alludes to certain parts and why one might replace them, but nothing she mentioned seemed to apply to my tractor's health.

Would anyone care to guess what the faint knocking is when I'm pulling a load? This typically happens when I'm skidding a log.

The knocking is most likely from a worn pump. not necessary a problem. The other n forum has a good how section and several articles that might help you.

Not sure what the other forum is, but if someone could email me the link I'd appreciate that help:

I went with the newer style piston being I was getting a new cylinder, but not a big deal. Safety valve yes, and that pin on the position control assembly that wears down. Might as well replace that while you have it open. Mine wasn't worn down all that much, but I replaced anyway.

Worse part of the job is removing and replacing top cover as it is kinda heavy.
Have a buddy handy to help lifting.

What weight oil are you currently using in the lift?

N's were designed for a mineral oil equivalent to 90wt. If you are using a thinner oil, this could contribute to leaks and noises you are experiencing.

If using the original spec oil and it still knocks - Live with it until it breaks. Current pump overhaul parts are either not available or of poor quality/fit.

You are probably on track with suspecting a leaking piston/cylinder but before you tear into it, pull the inspection cover and verify it really is the cylinder and not somewhere else.

I don't know the weight of the oil - I had someone else work on it years ago to get it going and I have been able to take care of things since then.

I will use a winch (I nearly wrote wench but I do not think I could locate a wench powerful enough to lift heavy objects for me) to pull the cover - but I like the idea of taking a peak for the leaky cylinder. (There is a video of a guy doing this on Youtube that's pretty funny. His hydraulic oil looks like sausage gravy. When he pulls the plug, it all rushes out all over his hands, the outside of the container that was suppose to catch the gunk... )

If you have a Tractor Supply nearby, the pix is the product you're looking for.

You will need about 5 gallons for a fluid change.
