Got my 8N engine back together

Well, mostly. It's close enough for now. Still got a couple months
worth of winter left to get it put back in the tractor. I have to take
my spare engine out of it which I'll start this week/weekend. If all
goes well, this tractor will be first on the list for paint this spring.

Pretty much a full rebuild. Crank was ground, cam miked good.
Valves ground, connecting rods and tappets re-used, oil pump,
governor, distributor and carb all rebuilt. The rest is new
including the pistons. New clutch, pressure plate, throw out
bearing, pilot, etc. A bit pricey that way, but it should out live me.

Jimmyjack, I haven't actually added it all up yet.
Machine shop work alone was $700. That included the valve job,
with him replacing all the valves, guides and springs and having
him replace the sleeves and hone them, the crank shaft grinding,
resurface of the the flywheel, replacing the ring gear, etc.

GB in MT GAVE me a brand new set of .090 sleeves and sent me
his TheOldHokie made sleeve drivers which my machinist used.
Thank you Gary! (and TOH)

Pistons were about $100, bearings about the same, rings, gaskets,
manifold, water pump, clutch parts, etc. etc. etc. Without adding
it all up, I would guess somewhere around $1200 to $1400.

I've bought running 8N's with four implements around here for
$1000. Guess I just like this one better.

BTW, I bought this tractor from a fellow forum member. John in
Mich. It was a fair deal and I think we were both happy with it.
Engines do wear out over time though, so here we are.

Thanks Jim. I've done quite a bit of experimenting with unpainted
bolts. In most cases they look nice until they rust. Which doesn't
take long. In one picture you can see the brass nuts on the manifold.
I won't paint those. I also leave stainless steel hardware unpainted,
like on the carbs I rebuild. But regular bolts and nuts haven't worked
out well for me so I paint them. I believe the originals were painted too.
