9N hyd pump

Hello. I have a friend that is working
on another friends 9N. I have a 3000
and a 5000 so I know very little about
the N's. He asked me if he has to split
the tractor to remove the hyd pump so
he can rebuild it. I do not know what
is wrong with it. I told him I know a
great source of information. That is
why I am asking here. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you in
advance!!!! John.

No, he doesn't need to split the tractor to pull the pump.

Best thing your friend can do for his friend is check out tip # 39 before he starts to work. Or maybe even tip # 16. Might not be a pump problem at all.

With all of the fluid drained out, block the front wheels & get the rear wheels up at least a foot. (he'll see why soon enough) Remove an inspection plate & disconnect the control rod from the pump. Remove the 4 bolts holding the PTO shaft in & pull it to the rear & out of the tractor. Loosen all of the bolts. Remove all but 2 corner bolts. Then, carefully remove them. If you have the rear tires a foot or more off of the ground, you will have enough arm room to hold the pump & lower it at the same time.

Thank you for the information! He is a great mechanic but is a heavy duty truck diesel mechanic. Just does not know his way around old tractors. Lol

You're welcome.

Sometimes these old tractors are counter-intuitive to anyone under 50. Positive ground confuses plenty of people. As do front distributors.

Manuals are a great help.

You are correct! If it were engine problems he would have no problems! He is just not familiar with the back half of old tractors. Thanks again for your help. I might be back with more questions.

Dont know if your friend has internet access but here is a detailed video I made on the whole process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yijOYVlVQjQ&t=2144s

The link opened for me.

It doesn't matter if you have 50 years or 50 minutes as a mechanic, if you don't know anything about these old Ford N's, keep your hands off the wrenches until you do. A root cause problem solving method is the way to proceed for any problem. Get the essential manuals and read religiously. Get a good DVD on 9N hydraulic repair -see LINK below from one of the sponsors here. Perform some basic tests first. Load lift capacity, oil condition, and system condition.
