smoke out of the oil cap

I just purchased a 8N that was not running. I got it started and it runs very good but it smokes out of the oil filler cap. I believe this means it needs new rings? Is there anything else that could cause this?

rings or sleeves. how bad does it smoke? have u done a compression check? u should have at least 90 psi in each cylinder.

Run it, warm it up, work the SNOT out of it, to shake off all the crusties from it's period of non-use, and only THEN evaluate it. Unless you need it as a hard-working tractor or a want a "trailer queen", a little blowby isn't gonna matter.

Then, if does what you ask of it, ask yourself if tossing $$$$ at it for a major OH is what you want, as simply tossing a new set of rings at a worn engine is basically a band-aide fix.

It smokes quite a bit when it warms up. I have not done a compression check, but will do that when it warms up a little. It is close to zero here in NY. Thanks for the advise.

Before you work the snot out of it for a better evaluation, give it a fresh 15W40 or 20W50 oil change.

You could also drain off a quart and add a quart of crankcase flush and let it idle for 20 minutes . . . then go 15W40 or 20W50.

I used to do a lot of flushes with Amsoil Crankcase flush before I converted an engine to synthetic.

Does it have a t-stat in it? It needs one; see tip # 25.

If you're lucky, the smoke is from the sludge in the oil; as it gets out, it evaporates out of the oil breather cap.

But, worn or stuck rings will get the same result: blow-by from compression in the crankcase.

Put a few tablespoons of Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam in each cylinder . Then work it hard a few times.

A compression check will let you know about the rings.

Thanks for all the advise. I buy dead ford tractors fix them up, paint them, and put too much money and time into them. But I want them right when I resell them. I am retired and love working on these tractors and only had to rebuild one engine so far.
