Unusual starter sound

Hello! Once again, my 50' 8N is not starting. Everything is new: 12V, new battery, new starter, new solenoid, new wiring. I attempted to restart the tractor the other day, and every time I push the start button, the starter makes a sound I can always describe as very fast electrical snapping, or extremely fast clicking. Months ago, I was having grounding issues, and the starter would make a single loud click, and then stop. But this time, it makes the same repeated sounds every time I push the start button.

Engine will not turn.

Bad starter?

Bad starter?

Sounds like a clicking starter solenoid - usually indicates a weak battery and/or bad cable connections to the starter. Not enough "juice" at the solenoid/starter to hold the solenoid and make the starter run. Check charge on battery, and check and clean all battery/starter/solenoid connections before throwing parts at the problem.

Bad starter?

Sounds like connection troubles, but you must have cleaned all connections while installing the new wiring. (?) Is this something that showed up after it got real cold? That's if it does get cold in your area.

Yes, connections are all new and clean. I still had a ground connection problem a couple months ago, but that created a different sound/effect compared to what I'm having now.

Battery charge is fine. I even hooked up a jump and attempted to start, no effect. The starter still makes very fast repeated clicking noises.

Sounds like connection problems though could be discharged battery.

Yes, it could be a bad starter, but more likely connection , wiring or battery related.

Diagnosing the starting system on your tractor is really simple.

Step 1 - MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL.

Then connect one of your jumper cables to the frame of the tractor and touch the other one to the starter terminal end of the solenoid. If the starter cranks the problem is either the solenoid (not likely in my opinion), bad battery, and/or you still have connection problems. Report the results for next step.

As others are telling you, it's time to do some troubleshooting before you start buying parts. Just because it's all new does not mean it wasn't bad out of the box or that it was hooked up correctly. And, if you would rather guess than troubleshoot the problem, I'd guess battery & connections before I'd guess solenoid or starter.

The noise is because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49. Or get it load
tested.)* Do not ASSUME it's good because it's new.

2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)

3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)**

4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

* No matter what else you do, the battery must be fully charged. A float charger is helpful; not a trickle charger, but a float charger. (I use Battery Tenders on all my tractors) If you need to jump it, see tip # 43.

** You can't see corrosion under the insulation.
