Re: Zenith Carb on 8n

My 9n had a zenith when I bought it. I've had no trouble. It
takes the same carb kit as my Case SC tractors.

"It takes the same carb kit as my Case SC tractors."

Were you able to find that kit with new throttle/choke shafts, new
retainers for the shaft seals and a new jet to replace the brass one
inside? I spent a lot of time looking for one with no luck. Closest
I came was a kit that had a throttle shaft, gaskets and seals.

A&I has a pretty good kit for the Zenith carb. It doesn't have a
choke shaft. Very few carb kits come with the choke shaft.

Choke shafts for most tractor carbs are the easiest thing to
make. Before the days of internet you couldn't find carb parts I
made several out of brass rod with just a file and drill press.

Last summer I ordered a choke shaft for a 49 Deere B. Deere
charged me $99.99 for a three inch rod with three holes drilled
in it. I'm going to start making my own again.

The best site for tractor carb parts is mcdonaldcarb.com.

"Very few carb kits come with the choke shaft."

That's kind of my point. Very few kits come with all the parts.
For a Zenith that is. Or a Carter for that matter.
For a Marvel Schebler, complete kits are readily available.
Of course, those choke rods are different since they have a slit
in them lengthwise that the choke plate slides in with the rod
being on both sides of the plate when assembled.

But its not just the choke rod. Jets, seal retainers etc. also
missing. I never did find the correct jet for that Case SC.
The previous owner/mechanic had butchered it.
I ended up modifying one out of a MS kit and made it work.

Was your JD carb a DLTX? Nephew and I did one recently.
Here's the kit we used. [b:e21cbbd263]YT[/b:e21cbbd263]

The parts for the John Deere all came from the John Deere
dealer. That's what the owner wanted till he got the bill.

Some of the choke and throttle shafts do have slits for the
butterfly. Cutting a flat notch in the brass rod works just as
well.I make my own bushings from K&S brass tubing. I have used
brass valve guides for Briggs engines.

I doubt Dale know who owns A&I. I don't really see why it would
matter. He's an 80 year old retired farmer that has a few old
tractors to play with in the summer months.

I'm glad you were able to get it fixed up and running for him.
I understand his thinking too. There was a time when dealer
parts were much better quality, even if they cost more.
