8N voltage regulators

can someone out there tell me the difference in the regulators no a `48 or `49 8N -vs- a later 50 to `52??? I`m working on a `52 8N with the stock generator and 6V system...I ordered an new regulator from the YT site...the new reg. looks like the early `47 `48 reg, but it has a different part #...I`m guessing if they were the same, YT would only sell one part#...any help will be much appreciated. During the production run, 8Ns had three different generators & VRs. The earliest had lower current output & 3 brushes (3rd had adjustment screw on rear plate with which current output was set) & used a non-current sensing VR. Later used 2 brushes (right side mount & the left side mount) & produced greater current output. Now days, typically the after market world replaces VRs for all those with a single part number (& it often comes with a mounting adapter plate) to cover all applications and mounting hole patterns.

JMOR........don't fergitt the early 8N voltage regulator was mounted on rubber baby-bumpers. Found out they didn't need'em so it is 1-size fitt-all now with a plate fer some applications. Remember, after you replace yer voltage regulator, you need to re-polarize everything. Just arc-spark the side-by-side ARM & BATT, ignition OFF. I use a short stubby screwdriver, butt you kenn use bailin' warr iff'n you want........electrical Dell

Thanks, Dell and jmor...I really appreciate;

The new regulator I bought here at YT had the small mounting holes...no room for the rubber insulators...That was what had me getting dizzy, and about to tip over...glad they`re not needed!

I got tired of fighting bad regulators and went 12 volts, best decision I have made in a while!

As JMOR explained, the early 8Ns used a 3-Wire/3-brush generator. In early 1950 it was changed to a 3-Wire/2-Brush style and also a new VR introduced. The original AUTO-LITE VR's mounted on three rubber feet/insulators. The aftermarket VR's sold today do not use the rubber feet -to be discarded when replacing the VR. The new VR's should come with a mounting bracket that also will house the light switch if used. The 2-brush generator obviously does not have the 3rd Brush adjustment screw on the back plate. Do you have the original, correct 8N-10145 tensioning arm on it? Also, it would be a good idea to polarize the new VR once it is connected and before you apply power. 50 52 FORD 8N Voltage Regulator

Tim, Thanks for the good photos... sorry, I don`t have the original vr...The tractor I`m working on (`52) was one I found in a local scrap yard...It had been dropped in a end dump trailer, then pounded in with the track hoe...The dash, hood, steering column hood gas tank were all smashed beyond use...I bought another 8n (`50) for parts...I have it running now, and getting it ready for paint. Thanks to everyone for all the help on this issue...I`m sure I`ll have many more questions. TomT

Tom - there are differences between a '50 8N and a '52 8N -notably the '50 uses the front mount distributor and a '52 uses the angle (side) mount distributor. Voltage Regulators are slightly different; generators are different too. nnalert will have the correct VR and wiring for your '52.

Your host here at YT have the correct parts. I like to buy my parts from them to show appreciation for this site.

Thank you for the update, Tim...I went with the regulator I ordered here at YT; it was ordered for my `52; but did not come with the flat plate for mounting a light switch.

I currently have a `45 2N, and `49,(my birth year), and `50 8Ns, in addition to the `52. the `49 is my every day use tractor, and the other 3 are projects.

thanks for your help! TomT

(quoted from post at 21:59:23 07/10/19) Is there any way possible to purchase this original style voltage regulator ?
expect that the only possibility is to find an old one that is still functional.
