Removing Ford 9n Pinion Ring and PTO Cap

I'm trying to find out what the best way to remove the pinion ring for the Ford 9n rear end. It seems to be on there pretty tight. Can you tap it out from the back?

Also, what does the OEM PTO cap cover look like. I've seen several designs but am not sure what is correct for my model.

What is a [b:dbb908cbff][i:dbb908cbff]pinion ring[/i:dbb908cbff][/b:dbb908cbff]?

Did you mean to type pinion shaft or ring gear?

Most likely yours would be 2nd from the left.

A good place to begin, would be to remove those nuts on the pinion that do not appear to have been touched.

(quoted from post at 14:43:46 12/14/17) You are probably right. I'm still not sure the proper name.

JMOR gave you good advice to remove the locking nuts on the pinion shaft. The shaft may slip out easily or require some persuasion. IIRC, I used a slide hammer to walk mine out.

Upon reassembly, on pinion shaft bearing preload, Ford spec'd 12-16 inch lbs of torque to turn the pinion.
