Do I REALLY need to remove the PTO shaft?

I'm taking the transmission out of my 8N. The front split is done. The book states to "remove the PTO shaft". Looking in the hole where the PTO lever is, I can see the PTO shaft going into the transmission. My question is, why do I need to take the PTO shaft out before pulling the transmission? It just has a spline on the end that will slip out of the transmission, so why do I need to take it out? There's a reason for my hesitation to take it out. The tractor has a backhoe on it and the hyd pump for it runs off the PTO. So there is brackets, etc. that I would have to take off which would really be a pain. So, please tell me what I'm missing that I have to pull it!

NO reason you can't pull it apart with the PTO shaft still in place.

However, more care will be required when putting it back together.
 
As Bob said pulling it part isn't the problem it's putting it back together. Lining up the PTO shaft and the main drive connection shaft is going to be a pain. I tried it once and fought with it for hours. Finally pull the shaft and had it back together in about fifteen minutes. I was working in a gravel driveway,alone, going thru the side cover so not ideal conditions. If you have the top cover off in might be easier to get things lined up but I would guess your backhoe is connected where the upper arm would be.
All I can say is you can give it a shot. If you have a friend an extra pair of hands will help.

I had to replace a trans in one of my 8n's a few years ago and I did not even think to pull the PTO shaft. No problems at all. Maybe I got lucky.

Got the transmission split off today, left the PTO shaft in, will deal with it on reassembly. Thank for all your advice,I can always count on the guys here to give helpful answers!

WOW...please edit the size of your pictures before posting them here.
 
A lot of tractors you don't want to pull the pto shaft. You have to pull the top cover to do it and get into the hydraulically engaged pto, etc.
I did a rear split on this one earlier this fall.
Getting it back together wasn't a big deal.
