8N hydraulic repair: chasing threads took a long time!

I recently did a hydraulic repair on my 8N, which may never have had its hydraulic case opened since being manufactured 1949. When disassembling it, the bolts, nuts and studs came off very hard, so I decided to chase all the threads with a tap and die. I couldn't believe how much crud came off of those threads. I had to chase them 2 or 3 times to get them clean. This was by far the most time-consuming part of the repair. By the time you've chased all the threads and received your replacement parts in the mail, you forget how it all goes back together.

ugh. i may have to pull the top cover one of these days. it has developed a leak. not bad enough yet to mess with it, but i suspect it won't get better with time.

thanks for giving me something to... look forward to?

and I thought I was the only one that chased threads....It sure beats trying to put something together, only to find something`s wrong with one of the holes, and then taking it apart and then chasing the threads.

chase all the threads with a tap and die.

I have read many times that OEM Ford threads were much tighter than today's standards.

Safest to use a thread chaser as it will not cut new threads like a tap or die will.

My first 8N hydraulic repair was really fun! I didn't have any trouble assembling it after the new parts arrived. The only problem I had was figuring out the piece that a PO had put together incorrectly. I knew there was something wrong, but it took a week of googling to find a picture that showed how it was supposed to be assembled. None of the assembly drawings I could find showed enough detail -- I suppose that was part of how it got put together wrongly.
