I was wondering what it would take to run alcohol.its a 9n front mount.
And what would be the purpose of that?
It would take over twice the amount of methanol to run it as it would on gasoline or pump gas alcohol mix.

Hi dave v

Assuming you are talking about ethanol...
Short answer:
Minor adjustment to carburetor.

Of course it is never that simple. The "rubber tip" on the float needle valve will swell. That can be fixed by using a solid brass needle. The "rubber" gasket in the sediment bowl will swell and leak. Maybe a cork gasket will do better. Maybe not, I don't know I have not tried that. The fuel shutoff valve on the sediment bowl if aftermarket has a "rubber" ring type packing. That will swell and leak. That can be fixed by replacing the packing with either graphite or Teflon rope packing material. The fuel tank may have varnish and other deposits from gasoline. Those will get flushed out and you will have plugged screens in your fuel system. You can keep cleaning the screens until all of the gunk is out. If the fuel tank has been "lined", odds are the liner will break down and plug up the fuel system. That can be fixed by replacing the fuel tank with a new one.

As pure ethanol has only about 2/3 the BTU/gallon of gasoline, you can expect to burn at least 50% more alcohol for the same amount of work as gasoline. Of course "pure" (anhydrous) ethanol is very hard to come by:) And those who have done extensive research on using ethanol for fuel say the best concentration is 80-90% ABV, the rest being water. The water helps to lower the temperature of combustion as well as converting some of the waste heat to steam helping out with power.

Speaking of power, ethanol likes a higher compression ratio than the 9N has, so you may experience some loss of power as well as fuel economy. If you want to try the experiment, E85 should give a fair approximation of what to expect.

I'll take 25 gallons of 'shine please... as far as converting, unless he has a still, and if so, why waste the alcohol on a tractor, what's the point? Back in the days, farmers would run whatever was handy. If they ran out gas, kerosene and alcohol would suffice.
