9N-2N-AY ???? identify engine Block

I need to replace the block in a 1949 Toro General tractor. It appears to look like a 9N or 2N block, however the serial starts with AY XXXXX. Several of the parts in the parts manual are 9N XXXXX part numbers. Are these interchangeable blocks? I have also heard that the AY block is an industrial grade that was also used on irrigation pumps and balers. Does anyone have any input, knowledge or know where I can get an AY block?

I am always looking for more information on these Toro units but their isn't a lot available that I have found. Thanks for any help.

Your AY (power unit) block is exactly the same as the 9N-2N block and early 8N block. It only got a 9N serial number if it was installed in a tractor. Finding one stamped AY may be difficult, but finding one that will work should be no problem. Lots of guys have found AY blocks that were swapped into their tractors as the balers, combines, pumps, etc became obsolete and the tractor needed a new engine.

I don't have an AY stamped block but where are you located?
Someone near you may have a regular 9/2/8N block.

I have an old Toro myself info can be hard to find. I find the AY block as others posted is the same as 9N. When I first purchased people often try to tell me model T because of the color. They made a Toro General and a Bullet. Most of the parts I have needed have not been a problem except for the Toro emblem on the hood as I am searching for. Most people think they only used around the golf course, but not true. With a little research you start to find that other industries used them like construction, mining and etc. My old Toro has never seen a golf course or a reel mower it had a life of pulling tobacco trailers in a warehouse in North Carolina. Toro is in my shop for the winter for engine rebuild. I am thinking about going forward with a full restore before reinstalling the engine. I will be using my Toro everyday on the farm so it needs a good going over. Good luck to you

What I consider industrial grade came from the factory with no cylinder sleeves and no harden valve seats other than that it can be sleeved and harden valve seats installed in the head.

I have built several other than that they were just like a N engine.

To me industrial is a cheaped down version not a up-grade. Is that bad NO a industrial would live in a more stable environment unlike a tractor engine so no need to spend the money to make it survive the elements.

It appears that the manifold is part of the hear ?? Exhaust coming out of the head ??

It appears that the manifold is part of the hear ?? Exhaust coming out of the head ??

After a lot of research it appears that the only difference in the blocks is that the AY block has a 2 bolt plate on the right side. This plate can be removed and a cam driven fuel pump can be installed. They do have sleeves and a simple head. Most don't have a governor and a plate covers that location. From what I have found most all 2N,9N and 8N parts will work on this block.
