Early 8n steering box overhaul

If I buy a steering box overhaul kit for my 47 8n 4 bolt steering box and replace all parts that come with it will it take out the excessive play my
steering has in it?. I have tried turning the tight sector clockwise and turning left sector the opposite, this only made it harder to the wheel but
still has the play? Thanks in advance

I wasn't aware that any one was making replacement sector gears for the 4 bolt box. The worm and shaft is about $300, as I recall. Maybe all it needs is a worm, bushings or bearings and races. But you won't know until you get in there.

I have 3 early boxes apart to be rebuilt . I have all of the parts and built a tool on the lathe to drive in/out the bushings and seals .

I have noticed that my gears and shafts mic'd out good , but the cast iron sectors are slightly hour glass shaped from decades of force .

The new bushings are tight in the center but looser on the ends . I don't think it is worth it in my case to bore the sector housings and make custom bushings .

My shafts , balls , and blocks are in good shape so new bearings and good maintenance should be good enough .

I really like the O'Reilly brand synthetic 85-90wt gear oil . It is almost clear and would give a good visual if it is contaminated or dirty . It looks like Karo / Corn Syrup .

If you are spending a lot of money on your tractor to make it top notch , get you a later model two bolt box . For an average working tractor the four bolt would be fine .

about the only thing you can't fix in a kit is if the sector teeth on the ballnut get worn to a point.. or the sector gears themselves.
