9N starter foot button

Hello Gentlemen of the forum,
You guys provided great help for my last problem (9N would start, run 2 minutes then die - turns out the cotter pin holding my new points was too large and was binding the points!), but now I have another I hope you can help with. The foot starter button on the old 9N seems like it can't push the rod far enough anymore. The electrical switch works fine, push on it and she starts right up. I have a spare electrical switch that also starts right up when pushed manually but when pushed through the foot button linkage it just seems to not go far enough to engage the switch. By the way, the tractor is in neutral, when it's not the foot button doesn't move at all. In neutral it moves, but seemingly not far enough. I hope I don't have to perform surgery and remove the steering column to get at the linkage, any ideas for a more simple fix? Thanks!

The simple solution is to remove the push button and place one or two small washers on the stem so the button does not have to push down as far to activate the starter. JBweld will hold the washers just fine.

You can take the steering box off and replace the rod or glue a penny to the end of your switch button. If still don't make contact use another penny. And that's my two cents.

" The foot starter button...."

LOL!

You must be a young man or a contortionist!

Old cars & trucks had the starter button on the floor, which meant using your foot. I think Henry meant for the one on the 9&2N's to be used with your thumb. :)

ditto what the others said.. you are getting linkage wear and the EZ fix is just to make the switch longer since the jiggle stick can't move as far anymore.
