This 8N bush hog etc. forward without any problem or noise. If you stop and back up you get gear noise and feel a little grabbing in the rear end. What could this be?

You can t back up with the pto running,the orc is the only reason that you can even stop with it running.

That's entirely wrong, you can go forward backwards or stop and put it in neutral the overunning clutch just let's the moment of the implement keep spinning as the pto slows. Pto doesn't run backwards or anything

PTO in or out it does the same thing. I'm thinking problems with reverse gear teeth.

Me too - Lurching would indicate missing teeth.

[possibly a worn pinion bearing, in reverse the pinion would have a tendency to "walk" up the ring gear teeth.
