RG have you good advice but if you're having problems installing your starter with the drive engaged - Bolt your starter together, install the Bendix and then spin it up off the tractor using jumper cables. Be sure to hold onto it as it has quite a bit of torque.

(quoted from post at 14:46:25 11/17/17) That won't retract it . The drive has to be spun by the flywheel not by the armature.

I respectfully disagree. I have seen far too many retract just by energizing the starter. Spinning it up and then removing power should will cause it to retract, just like when you crank the tractor; it fails to start and you release the starter switch.

On the contrary, if it is a "positive engagement" starter drive, it will move into the engaged position by inertia as the starter motor spins up, then lock into position and NOT retract 'til "overspun" by the ring gear when the engine "catches".
