I posted another message several weeks ago about a strange noise my transmission was making. knock-knock-knock........knock-knock-knock...etc. Didn't know if the noise was from the sherman combo or the 3 speed. I've also had "something" lock up in the drive train that froze the tractor while in reverse and unlocked only by putting the tranny in a forward gear. Well, today I took the shift plate cover off to see what I could see. The first thing I saw was oil that was white goo. There was moisture drops on the bottom of the shift plate cover along with some rust. Started the engine and immediately knew the knocking sound came from this trans. Couldn't see a lot with all the oil, scuse me, goo so I drained it. Amazingly I got about a half gallon of water along with the goo and the oil from the further back sections. What a mess. Anyway, what I found immediately is that the main drive gear is missing half of two teeth. Saw no other teeth issues on the gears that I could see. The knocking sound is coming from the Second Gear gear. You can see the gear move slightly and if you put your hand on it, can feel the knocking very easily. Since the gear is not turning I have no idea what is causing the knocking. The Third Gear gear right next to it is constantly turning so I am assuming something between these two gears is causing the issue. I see from the manual that to take the main shaft out, I have to take the tranny out so I guess that's next on the list. Your thoughts, tips and suggestions welcome. I have never worked on a tranny so this will be a new experience. Thanks everyone.
