8N Transmission woes

I posted another message several weeks ago about a strange noise my transmission was making. knock-knock-knock........knock-knock-knock...etc. Didn't know if the noise was from the sherman combo or the 3 speed. I've also had "something" lock up in the drive train that froze the tractor while in reverse and unlocked only by putting the tranny in a forward gear. Well, today I took the shift plate cover off to see what I could see. The first thing I saw was oil that was white goo. There was moisture drops on the bottom of the shift plate cover along with some rust. Started the engine and immediately knew the knocking sound came from this trans. Couldn't see a lot with all the oil, scuse me, goo so I drained it. Amazingly I got about a half gallon of water along with the goo and the oil from the further back sections. What a mess. Anyway, what I found immediately is that the main drive gear is missing half of two teeth. Saw no other teeth issues on the gears that I could see. The knocking sound is coming from the Second Gear gear. You can see the gear move slightly and if you put your hand on it, can feel the knocking very easily. Since the gear is not turning I have no idea what is causing the knocking. The Third Gear gear right next to it is constantly turning so I am assuming something between these two gears is causing the issue. I see from the manual that to take the main shaft out, I have to take the tranny out so I guess that's next on the list. Your thoughts, tips and suggestions welcome. I have never worked on a tranny so this will be a new experience. Thanks everyone.

If your top row is missing teeth then It's likely you'll be missing some teeth on the bottom, due to the trickle down effect. Hopefully you gear from your Sherman going into the trans is ok. Trans has to be split both sides and you might want to consider throwing in a new bearing in the PTO support.
If the white goo is in the trans it's also in the hydraulics and rear, drain and flush and check everything while a part.
If you need the tractor you can look for a used trans and switch them, then you can take your time and rebuild the other.

Its a good one to start you education on... Noting over complicated about it I would start looking for some reasonable parts (gears and shafts) sounds like you are gonna need them... The bearing and seal kits are reasonable. Once out I mount them on a engine stand and go at it...

Didn't know if the noise was from the sherman combo or the 3 speed

The 8N transmission is a four speed.

To replace any of the gears on the bottom shaft nearly every single bolt in the transmission has to come out. Front back and sides.

One thing I forgot to mention is that since you had water in the trans you will also have water in you Sherman. Make sure you drain and flush your Sherman. Failure you do so will reinfect the system with water again.

Thank you everyone for your input, I really appreciate it. So far I know for sure that I need an input shaft that fits with a Sherman combo - if you know of anyone who might have one, please have them contact me at [email protected] or 517-648-3948.

Thank you
