carburetor adjustment

Hi all, I just replaced my governor with a rebuilt one and am going through the process of adjusting the carb and governor. I have the ford manual which says start out by adjust the idle screw located on back side of carb. Can someone save me a little time and tell me which to turn the screw to speed up or slow down the idle and is easiest done with a long or stubby screw driver? Thanks

Stubby screwdriver. Clockwise for increase, CCW for decrease.

I don't know that you should "start out" there though.
Normally I would start by setting the main adjustment needle
to 1 and 1/2 turns out from lightly bottomed and the idle air
mixture screw set at about 1/2 turn out to get it running.
Of course, if your tractor were already running and you only
changed the governor, you may not have to start there.

I did start there, thanks though. I don't think it ever ran correctly with the old governor. Never had much acceleration when I increased it in the lever, once I got past the middle no more acceleration. Thanks, I'm sure I'll have more questionsas I work through this.

When troubleshooting an issue, any issue, the worst thing to do is start replacing parts without knowing the true root cause of the problem. A concise, problem solving method needs to be implemented in order to determine the root cause, then proceed from there. One can replace every part on their machine with new and maybe stumble on the one defective issue, or maybe not. The first step should have been to rebuild the carb especially if it hadn't been done in a while. Carb settings must be performed when the engine is warmed up, and sometimes takes 2 or 3 times to get it right. Then it can be determined if the governor is faulty. You say you have replaced the governor with a rebuilt one. Did you do the work or rely on one bought on ebay? 3-arm as used on 9N and 2N or 2-arm as on 8N -you don't say? I'd re-install original governor, remove the carb and rebuild it, then proceed from there. If you need help, me and a few others rebuild carbs -my email is open.

Thank you for the advice and no I didn't buy the governor off of eBay but from a reputable vendor who specializes in selling parts for 2n, 9n and 8n tractors. The 2 arm governor not the 3.

A carb rebuild is not that hard to do and not that expensive. Personally I would have started there too, but not my tractor. But still would be a good idea if unsure of the last time it was done or some contamination got in there. A cleaning or rebuild cures most of the running poor issues I have on my 9N or 8N.
