8N Distributor

Trouble still with the 8N 1952 model tractor after sr#263xxx. When using it last i had trouble with the points slipping, frequent need to adjust. Later that day realized that the screw that tightens the Retaining Plate, (Fig. FO 84 , page 58 of the FO-4 Shop Manual, is stripped out. ie when I realized it was not tightening anymore , but merely turning, i removed the screw and the threads were full of aluminum. So it doesn"t really tighten nor retain the position of the distributor. Looking on lie for suggestions for such a problem, JB Weld, don"t want to seal the screw in permanently, another was just to put some strands of copper electrical wire into the hole and it should tighten up. I will try that , however if someone has another suggestion I would appreciate it,
It will be about a week before I get back to the country to work on it again.
Thank you

I don't have manual handy but I do have a distributor to look at. It appears there is room to insert a screw from the underside of the point plate and use a nut on the top side to secure the breaker point position. You may need to use epoxy or solder the screw to keep it from turning. Another option would be to solder the nut on the under side which would allow for the continued use of a screw as before.

What I would do in that situation is to clean out the stripped hole with a number 21 drill bit, tap it 10-32, and use a 10-32 screw of the right length. There is plenty of room in the slot in the points.

Thank you fellas for your interest and replies. Bruce it is all original, Indiana Ken, I like your suggestion of the weld or epoxy the nut may have to go to the top for that. In case I have confused this , on page 126 of the FO-4 FORD Shop Manual it shows an exploded version of the Distributor. Ref. part #17 "ARM" it is there and still works, but see the screw that goes thru that plate opening of the arm with lock washer and washer, it is, "wallered out" (an East Texas expression) the receiving opening for that screw and will no longer allow it to be tightened as needed. and that is a part of the body of the tractor.
My tractor and I don"t live together, but I should be back up in the country next week and like to take all that I might need, as the closest O"Reilly and TSC is about 30 miles. Think this problem accounts for some other problems I had keeping the tractor in time and did not realize this would slip after setting it.
Thank you again, S

" as the closest O"Reilly and TSC is about 30 miles. "

Do NOT buy a new plate. New ones are cheap pot metal and the screw holes will wallow out about the third time you change the points.

And do not buy any parts from TSC.

I can't speak to O'Reillys, but this site, nnalert's Dennis Carpenter have Bluestreak points. (see tips 66,67 & 68)

If you can't fix your oem plate, get another oem plate.

I'd just JB Weld the thing right now & then get a good used oem plate for the next time you need to change the points.
