Hyd lift cyclinder

I am getting ready to install a new lift cylinder with new o'ring type piston from YT parts.
Does the new cylinder fit or do they have to modified a bit? My faulty memory says they need a bit of grinding, but maybe my mind needs the grinding.

If putting it in an 8N you will need to grind a bit of relief for the draft control. The one I installed a couple of weeks ago I also had to grind a bit on one side as the square head bolts would not go all the way down. Core shift I suppose.

Thanks for the information.

Some new aftermarket hydraulic cylinders come with the scalloped relief at the 7 O'Clock Position for draft control rod clearance -some don't. You don't say if for a 9N/2N or an 8N but do it is not required on the 9N/2N cylinder. See my article/document I wrote on 8N Hydraulic Repair over on the other Ford N-Series Tractor Club site in the HOW-TO's forum.

Do you have to grind the original three ring cylinder for 8N? I'd like to go with the one ring NAA type but don't want to mess with grinding it down.

The casting for the 9N/2N cylinder does not have the relief that was added for clearance with the 8N position control. It has nothing to do with three ring versus one ring pistons. Many if the aftermarket cylinders lack that relief and they need to have it added by grinding if you are going to install them on an 8N. If you are not also changing the cylinder replacing a three ring piston with a one ring piston can be done without modifying any of the cylinders. It is a simple one for one swap.
