9n or 2n holes in hood

I have a 9n or 2n hood with 4 holes behind the radiator cap and I am not sure what they may have been for. They are perfectly even spaced and look professionally drilled. Any ideas?

Thats what I was thinking. I was wondering if any one had an idea of what was attached on or under the hood with those holes

Just wondering...a hole is a hole, how can it look professionally drilled? :D
Very clean. no tool grinding marks

The holes I drill are the same way. I am not a professional hole maker.

(quoted from post at 19:30:39 10/20/17) I would bet a cup of coffee that no holes in a factory N hood were 'drilled'!

I agree. Most likely punched before forming.

So the consensus is they were for headlights. But why 4 holes?

First, headlights/lighting kits were never factory supplied off the line at the Rouge. Lighting kits were always dealer installed/available optional accessories. All doglegs except the early 9N smooth style doglegs had two punch outs on them when they were formed. These would be used to mount the headlights if desired. The 9N, 2N, and early 8N all used the winged medallion headlight mounting bracket and a rectangular backing plate. One hole was used to secure the backing plate, which went on the inside of dogleg, to the wing while the second hole was used to feed the headlight special hollow mounting bolt thru that contained the hot wire. This bolt was fastened to the inside dogleg up against the backing plate. That is why there were two punch outs. later 8Ns went to the round-cup mount and did not require two punch outs, only one. Hoods were never 'drilled' to accept/relocate headlight mounts except by the dealer or farmer himself. So to say 'you want to return it to original configuration' is an ambiguous statement. What do you want original? The hood? Then the holes would be filled in and all signs of ever being there gone after that. Doglegs would show two punch outs that may or may not have been punched out for headlight installation. What hardware are you looking for? Dennis Carpenter repops all the original lighting parts -lamps, wiring, brackets et al...

Great information. I am new to tractors and this is my first restore. I will probably fill the holes on the hood and install the headlights on the sides. You guys are great. I’m sure I will have more questions as I get going. Thanks again.
