finishing mowers

I have a 1950 8N and am looking for a 3-point finishing mower, preferably a used one. Will this tractor handle a 6' mower or
should I try to find maybe a 5' mower.

There are a few 6' units out there, expensive even used, but I don't trust the judgement of some guys looking to just move
their used stuff.

Thanks
Alden

I pulled a Woods RD-72 6' finishing mower with a rather tired 9N for years and had absolutely zero problems with power or weight. Mowing with the 9N was a different matter ;-)

A word of advice from what I seen would not BUY a New Holland parts are high and built cheep The old Ford mower was good built by Woods New ones are JUNK.

I've been using a 6' rear discharge finish mower for years behind my '41 9n with no problems. I,ve also used the same mower behind an 8n with same results. I would suggest 4 gauge wheels in stead of 2 with limiter chains and IMO the rear discharge is better than the side discharge.

Cut about 3 acres every week with a 6' King Wallace behind an 8N. No problems. Go for it.

Go for the 6-footer. I've used a King Kutter long enough to have pretty much worn it out.

depends on your grass I guess.......
my always damp side yard, where I have planted a lot of clover, makes whatever tractor I use to mow bark (lol..yes clover...I like clover. Had to add that cuz I read a lot of posts where people are always trying to get rid of clover in their lawns)

I bought a 5 footer because of tight trails and lots of trees, but my N's engines would easily handle a wider one.
'shrug' no matter how wide you buy, your mowing width depends on you. Springtime sometimes, a half width bite/pass is enough to pull a strong engine down.

ps ...what's up with finishing mower prices? Last one I bought new...dunno 10 years ago maybe....$600 in the shipping crate....they are double that now....

Thunder man I have picked up many of these. Everyone I ever talked to who had them recommended a 5 foot mower behind them. I have picked up many of them with the mower attached, probably 95 % of them were 5' mowers.

I've been using my 48 8N to finish mow 9 acres with a 6ft side discharge King Cutter for 16 years.

My 8N doesn't struggle in any way with the 6 footer. In fact, when the grass gets ahead of me and it is tall and wet, the first thing that happens is that the mower belt slips. The belt slips Looonnnnggg before the 8N runs out of power.

It wouldn't matter if I had 100 horsepower, there is only so much power that the mower belts can handle before they slip.

Now bush hogs are a different story with their geared drives, a bush hog can certainly bog down a 30 hp tractor, not so much with a belt drive.

Ditto what he said. ^^^

As SteveB points out, rotary mowers and finish mowers are two
different machines. 6 FT finish mower, 5 FT rotary mower.
If you have space constraints you can use a smaller one.
I wouldn't go larger than that though.

Pay the price and get a 6' machine. If you take care of it you'll have it for many years. I bought this 6' KingKutter in 1994 and have replaced one belt and one idler pulley. I just bought a near new Landpride at a garage sale this year. The Landpride is heavier, but I think The lighter built KingKutter mows nicer.

Your 8N will handle the 6' with ease.

scott, i'm glad your king kutter has more paint on it than mine. if it weren't for that, i'd be running out to the pole barn to check to see if mine were missing. that dent on yours at the left rear matches mine. in my case, the PO backed it into a tree one day.

Alden,

I have a 5' Agric and a 6' Frontier in good to VG condition if you're close to OK and interested. Both belonged to my grandmother and neither have much use on them.
