Smoking Resistor Block

I'm just curious as to what would cause the OEM resistor on a 48 8N to smart smoking after 10 seconds or so after start up? I had a coil go bad a few weeks ago and replaced it. Now I'm thinking that this resist.or is what cause the coil to fry. Any thoughts?
Front Mount Distributor
12 volt
Electronic Ignition
All new wiring harness 2 years ago been running fine until this

Did it smoke with old coil? is the new coil a 12 volt one or 6 volts? Ballast resistors do get hot.

I forgot to mention that the tractor will sometimes not fire right away (no spark) after the coil gave out and the new one put on. Or it will run for a few seconds then shut off and that's when I notice the smoke.

A new resistor will smoke when it first gets fired up...I found that out in 2003 when I rebuilt my '48 8N and at the initial turnover, I saw smoke and smelled it and thought I fried something but the tractor kept running fine. Smoke dissipated and I found out later the new resistor will do that. It's just the glaze burning off the ceramic.

The new coil is a 12 volt. Did the resistor
smoke with the old one?? Not that I know
off. When it stopped running out in the
field it shut off clean like you turned the
key off. Checked with a spark tester and
zero spark. Never started the next day
either. Put a new coil on and fired right
up then shut off after 10 seconds or so.
Checked spark. Nothing... Had ANOTHER coil
put on. Didn't want to do anything.

Jason......iff'n I hadda make a WAG (Wild A$$ Guess), based upon yer description, ya gotta BAD condenser. Condensers are generally bullet proof ...but... they kenn go BAD and LEAK electrons causing HOT COIL and resistor.......Dell

Dell,
No condenser. Electronic points. I put ANOTHER coil on and its been running fine. I don't know. Maybe something wrong with the first New coil?

No WAG'g... Was it the original 6-volt coil or a 12-volt coil? If latter, may have jolted a loose wire or something else. Put old coil back on and see if the problem returns.
