8N Front Rim 16 vs 19

Moving along with projects on the 52 8N and on to the tires ... it needs both front tires replaced, but as I dug in deeper, the original rims are rather worse for wear ... one has more rust, which may require some repair along with the standard cleaning and painting ... That got me wondering whether the cost for a replacement might be less than the actual repair - I'm not a welder, so all of that would be farmed out and it's "always worse than it looks" ...

Once I pull off the tires, if I am in need of a new rim looking at this site it seems there is a 16" or 19" option ... It is currently wearing 6.00 x 16 tires ...

As for usage, this is my wife's 8N - I'm just the pit crew ... it doesn't do a lot of heavy work, she uses it to lug materials around the farm, haul water, and a very rare small plowing job - and then I clean it up for a few local parades ... so with that in mind, should I just stick with the 16 3-ribs? Or is there some advantage to the 19?

I would stay with the 16". My 2N Dad got rid of the 19" as soon as 16" was avaible. I have hitches to pull the tractors with and nobody on them. I also have a 41 9N that had the 19" on when I got it. With that hitch the front wheels went wild. Put 16" on it and trailed perfectly. Only change was the tires.

On hard surfaces, the 19 inch tires steer easier.
In soft ground they tend to sink in further and steer harder.

16 inch rims are cheaper than 19s, but the tires cost more.

I'm keeping the 19s on my 8N but put 16s on my 2N with a
snowplow on the front. They worked better with the added weight.

When I got Hank, the fronts were junk. I bought new 12 inch wheels and tires already mounted for about a hundred bucks. I drilled lug bolt holes in the appropriate places in the wheels and they work fine for what I do; mow 15 acres of pasture, work up my garden spot, blade the drive way, use my jib pole, and general farting around. I don't road it but I think the loose front end would be a bigger problem than the tire size. gm

Gary, aren't the 12" diameter rims a little small, and makes it look funny with the front end on the ground and not much clearance.

They do look funny but a low front end does have it's advantages if you are mowing under branches, etc.
Ford built several LCG models (low center of gravity) to get them down close to the ground. Part of the lcg package was the front spindles were about 5" shorter than normal. Not am N but I run them on my 3000 along with some cheesy 14" car tires. My front end is about 8" lower than normal.
It looks goofy but I like how it functions. I also run 12.4 28 rears instead of the usual 13.6s. I've never had a problem with the front high centering - even when plowing. But you'd better be wuick on the clutch if your rears start to spin as it will dig itself right down onto the drawbar if you let them spin.

Do yourself and any tire man you use a big favor, get the 16" rims. They are so much easier to mount tires on than those awfull 19" things.

Den, not so it's really noticeable to me any more. It doesn't look any more out of whack then that 4000 or whatever it is below. gm

Using a N as a just puttering around tractor, I use the 19's.
After going thru the steering and spindles to get everything right, they steer with zero effort.
Any kind of real work for the N, I run the 16's. Tougher tire and rim.

Can't help with the cost, for fronts I've never bought a new rim.
Used ones are everywhere, and if you go 16's...there are zillions :)
Mowing tractors, I run automotive or implement style tires to stop the 'cookie cutting' when turning.
Be aware however, that smooth tires won't turn worth a hoot in mud or snow.

ps...if you go 16's and have to buy new tires...the 5.50-16 is a little better fit on a N rather than the 6.00-16. Especially if you are running the 11.2's on the rear.
