Rotary mower front guard

After years of seeing the back area of the 'N' take a beating
from debris (not to mention myself) I put a screen on the
old King Kutter. I should have done this long before now.
Took it out on a maiden mow yesterday, worked great.

looks good. Lot of labor in that. Have a very old Servis hog like that. Good on front, but rear chains collect pounds & pounds of stalky weed stems.

That's a nice job.
Is that an add on part from the factory or
did you make that?
Some of the heavier brands of rotary mowers
come with those chains as standard
equipment. I have them on mine.
I ran a KK for several years and had one
incident with a piece of something hitting
me. Dunno what it was but it came up and
nicked my ear. I felt it but didn't think
much of it so kept mowing. Later I realized
it had got me pretty good as there was blood
all over my neck and shirt.

That is nice looking work.

That said, I've been mowing for nearly 50 years with various tractor/mower combinations, and my experience tells me that front chain shielding is much less effective for keeping mowing debris off of the back of the tractor and operator than is belt shielding.

All of my tractor/mower combinations have front belt shielding and rear chain shielding (Yes, I do need to replace the front belting every 3-4 years.). The front belt shielding is effective for keeping dust, dirt, grass, etc., from me and the back of the tractor, while the rear chain shielding works well to keep the occasional rock or stick from being thrown onto the road where an opportunistic litigant might be lurking, and also serves to disperse the clippings a bit better than does belt shielding.

Thanks UD and JMOR. Yes I do have a lot of labor in it. Enough that I don't ever want to make another one!

Dean, nice to hear you can get 3/4 years out of your belting, I think I would be lucky to get half that. The chain will outlive me.

great job,
wish my Howse 5ft hog had a front guard,
it threw or kicked out a pick of wood one day, hit my leg, TO35 tractor, hurt like crazy, blood did not want to even look down afraid as to what I would see, thought my leg was broken.
did I mention just how bad it hurt my ankle.

when and bought a 6ft piece of roll baler belt and bolts, but never put it on, stuff is still setting out in the barn,

guess I may paid for not installing it someday.
building that front extension was the main problem for me, not just a bolt on affair, it must be extended out or the blade will hit the chains or belt.

Howse brand cutters makes a front guard, but it cost 1/2 the price of a new cutter.

Wellmax, You might need to bite the bullet and have an extension made or have somebody help you make one. The next chunk of wood flung out of there may get your good leg. As you and I both know, their dangerous, if you operate them long enough without a guard of some kind your bound to get struck with something.
