Please look under the restoration topic for my discussion on my 51-52 8n ford that won't start... I'm begging for suggestions now... Please help...

I can't find the restoreation topic. Tell what problem you are having. 6v or 12v? Does the starter turn the engine over? Does your spark jump 1/4" in open air? If you take the bolt in the carb bowl out, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in under 2 minutes? Post back pls.

In a nutshell... new plugs and wire, new coil, new carb, new sediment bowl and shutoff, new points etc., new on/off switch.. It's timed at 4deg BTDC.. Good gas flow from carb drain, spark will jump 1/4".. It is a 51-52 8N, 6v system (+ ground), side distributor.. I've mic'd the distributor shaft lobes at 0.775" across and 0.776" across the other two.. The dist. shaft feels snug with no wobble, the centrifugal advance is functioning... Points are set at 0.025" and the plugs are set at 0.25".. Compression across all cyl. is 105 psi... I've tried turning it over with a 12v battery.. The engine turns over, pops out the carb.. I've tried start fluid with no result.. I've checked the intake manifold for blockages and found none... I'm at a loss as to what to do next..

Make sure the battery is fully charged. Pull start it. 3-5 mph, in 3rd gear, ease the clutch out. Key on & gas on of course. Post back w/ results.

If it backfires through the carb, and you changed the plug wires, I would triple check that the firing order is correct.

It sounds like you might have some sticking valves. Get a spray can of carburetor and combustion chamber cleaner. Remove the air cleaner tube from the carburetor. Spray the cleaner in the carburetor air intake while cranking the engine with the key OFF. Do this several times for a few seconds at a time, pausing for about a minute each time. Then wait for about a half hour and try to start the tractor. It worked for me.

You're right. I missed his compression reading. I did nearly everything to my 8N that he did to his except test compression. My carburetor was also spitting out the intake. Carb cleaner sprayed in the carburetor while cranking with the key OFF stopped the spitting and the tractor started after it sat for a while.

when you set the timing at 4 degrees are you sure you used the correct set of timing marks? There are two sets on the flywheel.

Someone before me stabbed the dist. about 4 teeth off... Reset dist. and fired right up... I can't thank you all enough for you help... I learned a lesson on this one.... Thanks again..Jim
