Like the picture shows. Push the brake down and engage the pawl in the ratchet.

You might be interested in this aftermarket part. When I was a youngster, I always had trouble setting the brakes on the Ford 8N

A guy by the name of Eric Bielke put an article in a Winter '89 'N' periodical, detailing how to make a hand brake. This is a copy of his design made in the late 90s from scrap parts. As long as I keep the brakes adjusted it works fine.

I shut down the tractor and put in gear. Can't reach the pawls very easy.
