2N charges extremely low

Hi folks. I have a 1942 2N with the one wire generator (6 Volt). The generator 'motors' okay but it won't put out any more than 1/2 volt. I'm using an analog meter to check this. I unhooked the wire that goes to the cutout and that's when I got a reading; with the wire connected, I get nothing. Any ideas? Tractor runs fine, other than that.

you said, "charges extremely low". Does not sound like it is charging at all with only 1/2 volt output.

It's not enough to move the ammeter. I wasn't sure how to word it. I does put out some when the wire to the cutout is disconnected, but it will eventually run the battery down.

The round-can cutout may be stuck open... You can take it, the generator, and the battery to your trusty local starter/alternator guy and he will bench test them usually for free. On the generator, it's the AMPERAGE output that is important, not volts. The 9N-10000-C generator (same as the 2N-10000)specs are: maximum charging rate 11.5 amps at 1500 RPM. If the battery is weak and won't sustain a charge under load, then a good generator isn't going to fix that. Once all has been verified good, polarize generator before starting.

All is well. I got to looking in my 'store' and found a rebuilt 2N-9N generator. It doesn't have the solid end cap and it does have the single wire hookup on the case. No adjustment that I know of. It works just as it should and the cutout opens when tractor is turned off. Thanks, everyone, for the help. The 'new' generator came from Central Tractor when they sold out.

I would have the non working one rebuilt and kept for when needed.
